Opposite Canary Wharf are the only warehouses remaining from the first major dock development started in 1799. Justly listed Grade I, the warehouses incorporate magnificent timber structures with some later cast iron columns, but with major problems for conversion of very low headroom, deep floor plates and small windows. To overcome these, new construction techniques were developed to deal with fire safety and sound insulation issues with a range of innovative flat designs including inverted penthouses, galleries and flats with 15m high private atria. 112 flats have been created on upper levels, with 5 new restaurants and a public shopping gallery at quay level, costing some £20m. The project was won in a major developer/architect competition with developer consortium Manhattan Loft, Marylebone Warwick Balfour and London & Amsterdam.
