Manchester Ship Canal Company commissioned FSP to prepare an overall development framework for this area of canals and basins followed by the conversion of the principal remaining building, Middle Warehouse, into the first residential development in the area, with quayside shops and restaurants. The building, which needed extensive reconstruction including a new roof designed to create galleried penthouses, re-opening and glazing of the Great Barge Arches and re-opening the canal arm into them, was listed Grade II after restoration. It was the catalyst for what is now the popular Castlefields area.
