The Barley Mow Centre is one of the old factories used by Sanderson’s, the UK’s leading producer of wallpaper in the 1900’s. Their Chiswick factories were sold in 1931 and a variety of small scale industries occupied the Devonshire Works until the 1970’s. In the mid 1970’s, the Devonshire Works became the first commercially developed workspace in the UK. Workspace Group took over the building in 1993. The remodeling and refurbishment works of this building looked to rationalize the existing maze of small business units that had evolved in the building. With the installation of a new lift and a link block to the end of the external goods yard, the building is now accessible from all floors and all areas. The existing reception was enlarged and refurbished with a café area added to the space. A focal point for the businesses is, therefore, provided and acts as a setting for informal meetings. The existing goods yard was cleared out and given a glazed roof creating a 4 storey high atrium, with glass bridges linking each floor. The internal works retained the industrial aesthetic that already existed in the building, with both the new services and existing structure exposed. We are now working on the next phase, which will largely be new build.
