The leather industry was established in Bermondsey as early as the mid-18th century, using the skins from London butchers before being subsequently sold in the City markets. Originally built in 1833, the Leathermarket warehouses form a terrace around a central courtyard. The entire complex is currently owned by the Workspace Group, who over the last 15 years with FSP Architects has developed the site into a successful business centre. Units 1-2 Leathermarket were the last remaining un-restored areas of this complex. Previously occupied by a paper manufacturer as storage and office space, the building had suffered some damage. However, the units retained many of the features and character of the original warehouses. The outer walls are in London stock brick with timber columns and beams internally. The roof spaces are timber truss construction. The building was originally designed with offices in the corner spaces where much of the timber panelling and simple brick fireplaces remain. The units provide a good example of warehouse development from the early 19th century and are for this reason Grade II listed. The renovation project aimed to retain the original character whilst creating modern office spaces.
